just suddenly felt like posting a entry...
were you a fan of short storieswhen you were young? i was, and one story in particular, stayed with me deeply. It goes like this...
There was once a princess who lived in a castle. This princess had evrything, from loving parents, tons tons of money, to being utterly drop dead beautiful. Despite so, this princess was unhappy, and had a perpetual frown on her face. The king (her father , of course), was really worried for her and tried all sorts of methods to make her smile; from showering her with gifts, to hiring clowns and jesters, but the princess just wont smile.Seeing that the princess was of marriagable age, the king came up with an idea. He was to put up a notice to all hunks and dudes of his kingdom, that he was going to marry off his daughter, to the guy who could make her smile. As the princess was super chio and filthy rich to boot, naturally, all the guys, tall, short, fat, thin, some as cute as steven gerrard, others as charming as takeshi kaneshiro, came to try. They told her jokes, made funny faces, showered her with the most beautiful gems and emeralds, and yet they failed to make her smile. As the story goes, the notice was seen by a pauper boy, who, also wanted to try to make the princess smile. sitting under a huge oak tree, he thought hard about how he was going to make the princess smile. Lo and behold, an idea came to him... So a week later, the pauper boy went to the castle. Kneeling in front of the princess holding a huge bag, he told the princess that the things in the bag would make the princess smile.Opening the bag, the princess found a bunch of oak leaves. "These oak leaves", he said, "were collected by me everyday as they fell from the trees, caught before they reached the ground. An old man told me that such a leaf, meant one happy day for someone. There's 365 leaves in this bag, to give you a full year of smiles and happiness." Staring at the leaves, the princess was so touched the she finally smiled. And as all fairytales, the pauper and the princess got married and lived happily ever after...Its probably been 16 years since i read this story, but till today, as i walked beneaththe trees and watched the leaves fall , i would feel comforted. Most times i wouldnt try to catch those leaves, but it was nice to think that somewhere, somehow, a leaf would be caught, consciously or unknowingly by someone, anyone, in this world, which meant a happy day for that person. Its a beautiful thought, and it would make me smile.
I do not know why i am telling this story. Maybe it was because i suddenly remembered a fren who was able to write short stories vividly, stories that never failed to touch people's heart. Or maybe it was the sight of falling leaves on my way home today. Or maybe, just maybe...
And i'll end this post with a question...
What constitutes a happy day, and what makes you smile?
